Chapter Fourteen
As soon as Aiden and I approach our house, we stop dead in our tracks by the sight in front of us. The entire house is shadow-like, as if it doesn’t belong in this world.
“No,” Aiden gasps. “Their headquarters is here.”
“What?!”
He points. Piercing the walls to get a good look inside, I spot the entire group of evil minions gathered in our tiny living room. Brittany is there, as well as Brad, Harriet, Harry, and Celia.
“Oh, no,” I say. “She’s got the rest of them, too.”
He nods solemnly. “Telling them who they really are is out of the question now.”
I notice Ronnie sitting on the couch. She’s not shadow-like, but she doesn’t look like she’s been captured. Her face is relaxed, as though she knows what’s going on. When I point that out to Aiden, he stares at her.
“Ronnie’s involved somehow?” he says under his breath.
“Is any of this related to the corrupt covens or is it a separate thing? Because if the covens are involved, then it would make sense that Ronnie is part of this, too. She’s in charge of the ‘banished’ kids.”
He sighs, his hands fisting at his sides. “I don’t know what to think anymore. We can’t trust anyone.”
The group is watching the news on TV. In every single country, there have been unknown animal attacks.
I look at Aiden, my heart about to burst out of my chest. “Aiden, the world’s coming to an end and there’s nothing we can do about it.” I gasp as a thought hits me. “My magic book. It’s in the house.” I look under my bed. “No, it’s not in the hiding place. They took it.”
He stares at the building. “What would they want with the magic book? There’s only light magic in there. A few dark spells, too, but they don’t need a book to cast spells.”
“Maybe they took it so we can’t find it.”
His eyes widen. “They’re expecting us to come here, probably to kill us.” He grabs my hand. “We need to get as far away from here as possible.”
I pull my hand free. “Are you kidding me? People are dying out there. I’m not going to run away like a scared kitty.”
He shakes his head. “I don’t mean we should run and hide. But we need to get away from the house. If they know we’re here, they’ll capture us and kill us. There will be no one left to save the humans. Save ourselves, then the world. We’re no use to anyone dead.”
“Okay. Where do we go?”
He takes my hand again. “No magic. They’d sense us in a heartbeat.” He tilts his head forward. “We run to anywhere we’ll feel safe.”
We take off like the speed of light. I’m not sure how long we run, but definitely hours. My legs burn, but I push forward.
We make it to a forest. Aiden and I drop to the ground, completely spent. All I want to do is shut my eyes and sleep, but it’s not safe to do that.
